Seemingly taking inspiration from Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone developer Raven Software decided to launch a special event yesterday that culminated with the destruction of Verdansk in a spectacular fashion. As part of the event, Warzone introduced a new game mode featuring a massive brawl against zombies in matches that would only last about 10 minutes. The kicker was that the zombies were controlled by players who had previously fallen while playing as regular humans. Given that you would drop in with only a shotgun and some ammo, chances were pretty high that you would turn into a zombie long before the end of the match.
The zombie-themed event only lasted for a few hours and ended with the destruction of Verdansk via nuclear missile. Unfortunately, the event didn’t run nearly as smoothly as expected. Countless players started to flock to Call of Duty: Warzone shortly after the flood gates were opened, resulting in massive server stability problems. As reported by Eurogamer, the servers were down for at least 40 minutes during the event. Meanwhile, long queue times and frequent crashes were common occurrences as well.
On the bright side, that was only part one of the event. The destruction of Verdansk is scheduled to continue later today, with part two of the special event set to begin at 8 PM GMT. Hopes are high that Raven Software learned a thing or two from yesterday’s mishap and will be able to provide a smoother experience for part two. But we’ll just have to wait and see.
Interestingly enough, there are numerous reports that the new Call of Duty: Warzone map was briefly playable for a few hours during yesterday’s event. It turns out this wasn’t intended and Raven Software fixed the issue shortly after. However, the damage had already been done by then. Players who managed to get a sneak peak revealed that the new map will be a 1984 version of Verdansk. That’s right, we’re taking a trip back in time to experience Verdansk during its glory days.
Players are reporting that 1984 Verdansk is a much more hospitable place, with brighter colors and greener environments. A lot of the buildings and locations you know and love will still be there but there are also many new ones to explore. The new map will become available to everyone as soon as Call of Duty: Warzone Season 3 starts. In addition to the new map, Season 3 also brings to the table new weapons, balance changes, and more.
